- Starting too fast : you would consume all your glycogen reserves during the climbs, fatigue your muscles during downhills and would pay afterward a hard price for a little gain.
- Starting too slowly : it is useless to go below your normal speed, you risk seeing the hour barriers get closer which would generate stress.
- Changing you usual food regime : Do resist the urge to increase the quantities during the last meals, you would only overload your stomach which will anyway be strained. Do as you do when you train (unless you do anything at training !!!)
- Using new shoes or untested equipment.
- Relying on what other riders or volunteers tell you about the distances and the length of time to get to the next supply, they may be mistaken. Provide the profile of the course.
- Procrastinating for handling a problem: If you have a friction point on your clothes or a light blister, stop it quickly. In any case, it will have to be done and the sooner the better.
- Letting yourself be defeated by the events. The perfect race does not exist and it is normal to have shots of “worse”. It usually ends up passing.
- Getting excited in moments of euphoria. The route is long and who wants to travel far …
- Become grumpy by focusing on problems: volunteers are not responsible for the weather, length of the course or fatigue. Take a step back, watch the race from above and mentally anticipate the problems to have a ready solution
- Deciding too quickly to give up : Think carefully and make sure you do not regret your decision the next day. It will take a year before you try again
